The ASL Club exists to promote American Sign Language education and Deaf cultural awareness on campus.
Our mission is to:
Create a community for students interested in learning and practicing ASL.
Promote inclusion and accessibility through Deaf culture events.
Foster understanding of intersectionality within the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) community.
Offer opportunities for collaboration with Deaf professionals, interpreters, and advocacy groups.
Encourage ally-ship, linguistic humility, and cultural competence.
Provide a space for students of all ASL skill levels to grow.
Our Goals
Promote ASL Education: Provide accessible opportunities for students of all skill levels to learn and practice ASL through lessons, workshops, and peer-led activities.
Foster Deaf Cultural Awareness: Host events and discussions that deepen understanding of Deaf history, culture, and the diverse identities within the D/HH community.
Build Community and Inclusion: Create a welcoming space where students can connect with one another, Deaf professionals, interpreters, and advocacy organizations.
Encourage Allyship and Advocacy: Equip members with the tools to become effective allies and advocates for accessibility and inclusion in their future personal and professional spaces.
Support Intersectionality and Representation: Highlight and explore the intersections of language, culture, disability, and identity within the Deaf community to foster deeper empathy and awareness.
Engage with the Broader Community: Partner with local Deaf organizations to offer volunteer opportunities, service events, and guest speaker engagements.
Celebrate and Share ASL: Promote ASL across campus through creative media, social events, and public initiatives that raise visibility and appreciation for the language and its culture.
